I unwittingly disturbed 30-40 Redwings sitting in 2 apple trees in my garden this evening and saw them disappear into a nearby sheep field on the south side of Keal Hill. I decided to follow them on the chance of seeing other thrushes, and was mildly astonished to count at least 280 Redwings feeding in the sheep field with 15 Fieldfares and a smattering of the local Blackbirds. Presume these will be heading northwards after dark. Anyone else seen similar numbers of (presumed) pre-departure flocks ?

Redwings were arriving from the south-east during the fog up until about 1030 at Donna Nook this morning. They made only brief stays, feeding in grassy areas on the dunes before leaving to the north-west. In all, I counted 420, along with 70 Blackbirds, 3 Song Thrushes and 4 Fieldfares. Other migrants were 2 Black Redstarts, 8 Robins, Wheatear and Swallow.
