Finished the day with 102 species, starting at 05:30 and finishing at 20:30 Highlights: Firecrest 1 (A great find by Jim and Jill Atkins this afternoon near Sykes Farm, showing well on and off for 2 hours, less than 15 metres away at one point, enjoyed by many) Red Kite 1 (viewed from the wash viewpoint this evening) Glaucous Gull 1 (flew into the wash this evening) (This was the 100th species of the day and the most surprising of all!!) Black Redstart 1 Ring Ouzel 2 Bullfinch 1 White Wagtail 1 (Jacksons) Willow Warbler 1 (singing in the west dunes, briefly) Yellow Wagtail 4 (south) Swallow 35 (south) House Martin 9 (south) Sand Martin 6 (south) Redwing 2000 (south, early morning) (hundreds more arriving at dusk) Blackbird 140+ Song Thrush 5 Fieldfare 1 Sandwich Tern 1 (south) Hen Harrier 1 Merlin 1 (chasing a pipit) Short-eared Owl 1 Tawny Owl 1 (heard only) Woodcock 1 Jay 1 (probably the same bird as yesterday) Lesser Black-backed Gull 81 adults (moving south, throughout the day) It seems to get better each day, what a day!!!!) I was around Mill Hill at about 0730 when a continuous stream of redwings moved south at low level, c 700 birds with a few blackbirds, song thrushes, starlings and a ring ouzel mixed in. Observations this evening were similar to Geoffs report - redwings and blackbirds were amassing in hawthorn trees on the East Dunes before leaving high to the north-east - I saw approx 90 blackbirds and 500 redwings leaving the Reserve over the sea well before dusk.
