I remeber when I was listening to the nightingale in Chamber's Wood the other week that a song thrush singing close by had robbed a couple of phrases from the 'gale. I am not sure how common this is but what you said reminded me.

the habitat just does not look right to me with a narrow open bank under the tall trees and not much ground cover; a Song Thrush is feeding young in the trees there but in 2 hours I heard nothing; it has also been listened for at night and nothing heard so the debate continues as it were until someone can get a recording of what is being heard

Yep,I heard it today very briefly,i did the actual notes myself and it replied once then no more,i did the same yesterday and it replied,,,but the weather was bad, maybe someone playing a nightingale song might do it?my own opinion is that it is not a Nightingale and probably a thrush..doing some notes of a nightingale..famous last words!!
