Post subject: | Westgate Woods - Cuckoo |
I was greeted by a calling Cuckoo during a quick trip up to Westgate Wood this evening. I stuck to the perimeter of the woods and was finally rewarded when it decided to have a little two-minute flutter over the adjacent meadow before settling back in the trees. It was still calling as I left for home (1915). Also:- Barn Owl x 1 Whitethroat x 1 Chiffchaff x 1 Sedge Warbler x 2 Goldfinch x 3 very noisy fledglings! Had previously popped to Wyberton Churchyard, which yielded one Great Spotted Woodpecker, two Great Tits, one Blue Tit, one Wren, two Chaffinch and a pair of Mistle Thrush. |

Hi Katharine, The Cuckoo was calling from the within the wood and could be heard clearly from the car park at the Five House Lane end. I stuck to the path between the wood and the meadow and lucked out in the end when it decided to stretch it's wings! |

Hi Katharine, Did you manage to get up today? If not, I just had a quick bez up the road after Springwatch and Cuckoo is still present. Was calling from a telegraph pole for about ten minutes before flying back into the woods near the Five House Lane car park again. As like yesterday, it was still calling as I left. Also had a Little Owl sat on the next telegraph pole along to the Cuckoo! Not bad for a bit of twenty minute fly-by birding. On another note, popped up Frampton straight after work and managed to briefly pick up the three Black Terns reported today - but didn't see them again after approximately 1800. |
