A Whimbrel flew west at Garthorpe yesterday evening, 5th June, at about 9.30 p.m. This seems late for a spring passage bird but is perhaps in keeping with this peculiar year when there is a major arrival of spotted flycatchers in Dorset on 1st June.

P.S. I didn't see the Whimbrel but will be counting it. My list is whatever I say it is.

A single Whimbrel in the loose company of 13 Curlews also at the south end of Donna Nook this morning. A Hobby flew north at 1110.

Given the bizarre spring it is quite possible that some migrants are short stopping and could turn around and wander back without even attempting to get to their breeding grounds and nest.
A splendid russet ruffed male Ruff at Alkborough this morning was presumably the first of the autumn! Failed Lapwings are also starting to congregate.
