A one and a half hour seawatch up to the high tide this morning produced a beautiful summer-plumaged Red-throated Diver heading north close into the shore. What was presumably the same bird passed south much further out about ten minutes later. Also heading north were 12 Gannets, 15 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Terns, 100 Common Scoters and a Guillemot. 3 Gannets flew south as well as a Kittiwake, a Guillemot and 6 distant auks. Mostly the usual breeding birds on the dunes, though 3 Common Buzzards were thermalling over the coastal fields.

Logically if there is one drake Surf Scoter with 14 Commons at Filey there should have been at least 7 in that flock of 100 Steve!

If only! I would have been quite happy with just the one!
