A strange sighting here at Garthorpe a little while ago. At about 0530 on 21st July, I heard an odd noise (a sort of mix of whining and growling) outside the bedroom. It sounded as I would imagine a small large cat (or possibly a large small cat) would sound if annoyed. Looking out I could see two Moorhens standing alert in the orchard, and I assume it was them making the noise. A few yards off, on the ground and in the angle between a shed and a 6 ft (that's 1.8 m) fence, a Tawny Owl crouched, cowering. One of the Moorhens then charged at it and, with difficulty and after a flurry, the owl took off and managed to get on to the shed roof.

Completely separately, there was a singing Quail here during 19th-27th June, in a ungrazed grass field. I've not heard it since and cattle have been in the field since early July.
