Post subject:  Bittern

Boultham mere a.m.
Unusual for the mere at this time of year a Bittern crossed low and behind
the raft into the reeds on the railway side, chased by B H Gulls and a Common Tern.
Not much else about.
Common Tern + juv one of two which survived after fledging the other was dead in the water on 24th July.
Jay 4
Green Woodpecker 2
Heron
Cormorant
Buzzard
plus usual Gadwall/ B H G Gull/ Coot/ Moorhen/ Mute Swan.
Also Water Rail heard

As far as I am aware this is the earliest ever record of a returning Bittern at Boultham mere.
Birds are usually present from October to March.
