There has been a genuine Report on 'Birdinformation' of yesterdays 'Rustic Bunting'. Seen behind flagpole at Pyes at around 2pm this afternoon. |

Couldn't get back to Pyes today, grandchildren sitting. Am seriously thinking I might go early tomorrow though. I now believe the photo's of the 'Rustic Bunting' were taken accross the river and not near the Flagpole. If that is the case then its obviously quite mobile. So wondered how many have been actively looking around the Pyes Hall area today please? Thanks.... |

Me being a bit of a glutten for punishment I returned to Donna Nook again today intent on finding the Rustic Bunting. Arriving at 8-15am I spent the best part of the next 7 hours checking every bit of suitable habitat between Stonebridge and Pyes Hall with only 2 Yellow-broweds, 4 Willowchiffs, 5 Robin, 4 Goldcrest and many Reed buntings viewed and recorded but no Rustic! ........ Or was there??? In between the lows & lows of my rarity hunt. I was fortunate enough to meet or be introduced to several more very nice LBC members, including Colin & Sheila, Nige Lound, Steve Lovell and back at Stonebridge C/park bumped into Bill Meek who I have known from birding at Tetney. While Bill and I were talking in the car park a lady approached us and asked if we were birders. obviously there was no easy answer to that, nor was it easy to make positive suggestions to the identity of the Bunting sp. she had just seen pretty well at Pyes Hall. With I'D guide in hand open at the page with Little. & Rustic bunting, the lady went onto describe seeing a Bunting with very bright facial markings. She even noted the call, jazz, how it flicked its tail repeatedly and mentioned in passing a raised crest. At that point I laughed out loud and asked her to stop, as I couldn't stand it if she described the bird I had spent all day searching for. Continuing her story and her thoughts regarding the bird. Stating its 'super' looked yellow and asked us. "Could it could possibly be a 'Yellow-browed Bunting'...... OMG! After spending half the day at Pyes Hall I was dreading the long walk back but knew I would have go back, if the lady was correct. Bill and I spent some time intently listening too and questioning the lady, while also going through several possiblities for her bird. The more we debated the sighting and her description it was no suprise to find she became a little unsure. In the end she decided it was 'POSSIBLY' a Reed Bunting but just before leaving, with Fieldguide in hand the lady pointed too and compared the picture of a Reed bunting to the picture of Rustic. Saying its facial features were more like the latter. No! I didn't go back but driving home I couldn't stop thinking about that ladies parting comment, while pointing to that Rustic Bunting. Might even see you there AGAIN! tomorrow. Goodnight! |

Nothing as dangerous as a beginner with a field guide. Everyone seems to unerringly veer to the rarest species that looks remotely like what they have seen and in many cases bears no resemblance to what they have seen! |

Yes we thought very much the same Graham. Despite feeling sure the lady had in fact been looking at a Reed Bunting. She would thoughtfully listen to our comments and suggestions for a possible ID. Then return to the Fieldguide and show me the page with our friend the Rustic Bunting on it. That's what worried me. Yellow-browed Bunting would have been ok though ;o) |

good job I didn't have a field guide with me I might have felt slighted there as I said the bird was something that warranted more than a casual look and I dare say that if a rustic had not been seen in the area I probably would not have bothered, but I didn' get a second look one two three and you had to lift your bins and focus in that time, just trying to help lads sorry terry whalin |

Hi Chris. Don't think its that simple. Last report from spurn went. something like. "Unconfirmed Report of Rustic Bunting though no details of where or when or by whom!!!" Rustic Bunting reporting seems to be quite complicated on both sides of the Humber. |
