Can anyone from the Boston area check this out please? I have had a call from a colleague that there are 3 Probable Slavonian Grebes at Black Sluice Boston in the South Forty Foot near the Sluice at TF3262342853 viewable from the South footpath. Thanks Russell Thanks to Barry from Boston for identifying them as 3 x Red-necked Grebes |

According to colleagues the 3 Red-necked grebes have been around for several days and sometimes disappear behind the Weed screens of the Sluice and can disappear from view especially if the area in front of the cafe gets busy. Mornings would seem a good time to see them. (according to colleagues the area behind the screens have a lot of small fish present) I believe that photos have been taken to confirm the ID but I have not seen them myself yet. |

I think it very unlikely red-necked grebes would exhibit the behaviour described or for three to occur in this unexpected location. Cheers, John |

First time for everything John, although it does sound odd behaviour. I am only passing on the info I have been given and as mentioned have not seen the birds or photos myself yet. My colleagues are not bird watchers but probably see Little Grebes regularly on the rivers and in their opinion these birds seemed different and from their description I first thought they were describing Slavonian or Black-necked grebes. Barry( not sure of surname) rang me to say he thought they were Red-necks and that he had taken some pictures. I do not have Barry's phone number so if he is reading this can he give me a call please or send me any pictures he has. Better to alert the Boston birdwatchers early rather than to stay quiet and possibly miss a good thing in my opinion. Russell |

No worries, Russell. Appreciate the heads up! Besides, I only work two minutes up the road and it gave me an excuse to treat myself to hot pasty from the bakery on the corner! |
