After finding 3 Crossbills last week, we decided a return trip was required.
So this morning we returned and heard a large flock of Crossbills fly over but could not locate them. Following lunch we went back to the same area and found a flock of 9 birds which we followed. They were then joined by a second flock of around 10 birds at the ninth tee, feeding on Larch cones. Chris scanned the flock to check for Parrot Crossbills but found a Two-barred Crossbill! Following a short jig, Chris put the news out.
Before others arrived the flock duly flew off, but subsequently returned with the star bird much to the delight of those who made the trip over.

Regards
Mark Johnson with Chris Heaton.

What are the access/parking arrangements please?

We parked in the car park behind the hotel, follow the road left through the first car park this will bring you to where the golfers park. Follow the main track (Home Beat Drive on Google Earth) through golf course to the eighth tee on the right. Crossbills were in the Larches by the eighth green. If in doubt check at reception.

Regards,
Mark.

For anyone visiting this site,i would ask permission before just strolling up.In the past the site has been checked for birds and we always asked permission from the groundsmen working on the course or from managerial staff....i suspect they wont be too happy if hoards of twitchers start turning up un-announced.

The bird is still present and showed well this morning with about 15 Crossbills.
There were only 7 of us there and we got permission before going on site.

I Played golf at Forest Pines some time ago & recall it had three 9 hole courses, each called by different names. Forest, Pines & ????.
Not the normal 18 holes.

So wondered which of the 3 named courses the X-bills/Larches were on please?

Birds very flighty today, but the Two-barred was eventually nailed down feeding alongside main road in Larches with 22 Commons.Really nice to get a local bird after the numbers in the country this winter.

Found feeding quietly in a high larch on its own this morning about 8:15 but the 8 or so Commons joined it and they all flew: up to 7 Commons relocated by 11:00 but no further sign of the 2-barred when I left but other observers still looking

I am assuming people are still looking for this bird but the reports are deafening by their silence; from what I can gather the latest sightings are as follows but please do correct me if you know better;

Friday about 10 minutes from 08:45 - 08:55 not seen later in day
Saturday not seen at all?
Sunday seen fro about 2 minutes around 07:30 and not again all day

I know someone who was there all day Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 and did not see the bird at all
