Post subject: | Magpies without tails |
Magpie 29 Whilst travelling from Skegness to Boston yesterday afternoon by train between Bellwater and Sibsey I recorded 29 Magpies. Interestingly 11 of these had completely lost the long wedged- shaped tail although did not appear to be suffering from loss of flight ability. Is this a moult at this time of year or a near miss from a shotgun or are they being predated upon and if so by what? Any suggestions folks |

George, Like the majority of passerines, adult Magpies undergo a full post breeding moult. It is not unusual to see odd ones at any time of year with accidental tail moult but 11 seems to be most unusual. Stuart |
