Sunday 8th June

Baumber
Whilst silage making in the sun this afternoon was joined by:-

Buzzard x4
kestrel x2
Kite sp x1
LBB gull x1ad & 1 cy
Carrion crow x4
Magpie x1
Meadow pipit x1

The Kite ID I was unsure of. First noticed as a shadow around my tractor as it followed me but sadly it did not linger long and by the time I got the bins on it it was already far off and silhouetted against a blue sky, however it's jizz did'nt hit me as Red Kite which is still pretty unusual in these parts. Any Black Kites around?

Yesterday 7.30pm :- Turtle Dove purring half a mile west of the village. This is my second record of a singing male this year. A fortnight ago I heard and saw one in the village on 25th May. I dismissed it as a passage bird but now having heard a second makes me wonder if we have a breeding pair. If so it would probably be the first this century in Baumber that I have located!

I ventured out with the grass mower again yesterday afternoon this time to cut a crop of hay. Was soon followed by:-

Buzzard x2
Kestrel x1
LBB gull 1Ad and 1imm
Com gull x1imm
BH gull x3 Ad

At 1540hrs a Kite appeared. On this occasion it lingered for a number of minutes and landed to grab a meal. I got excellent views this time of a fine adult Red Kite.

On Sunday evening had an equally excellent view of an adult Hobby taking a luckless swallow near the R. Bain at Baumber mill.

Finally the elusive Baumber Turtle Dove of 2014 put in an appearance at lunchtime today, 1st July, feeding with a few woodpigeons on a weedy area of the farmyard.
