The Lincolnshire Bird Club

A real feel of the season towards the end of my walk this morning. As I wandered down the quarry-side footpath towards the New Pits the tunnel of thick hedgerow poured out birds in front, disturbed by my presence. Blue tit, wren, chaffinch, greenfinch, dunnock, robin. Dozens of blackbird and redwing with a jay calling to my left and two fieldfare chacking overhead.

As I walked along the New Pits, the gentle fluting calls of whooper swans drew my attention and a flock of 20 were flying low over the arable field. They circled a little but headed up the hill and away. With New Pit 3 loaded with wildfowl it was like being within the pages of a book about 'the old days'. Rain patted out it's tune on my shoulders but my smile was like a loose dog in a chicken pen.

Can I make a suggestion based on reading this and a few other reports over the years from various people and places? How about, in our annual LINCOLNSHIRE BIRD REPORT book we have a page or pages of maps/directions/info either simple maps or even like Gosney sketches of all the Lincolnshire sites that get named in reports but many of which I have no idea where they are.
This is in no way a snipe at you Andy, this is simply a suggestion for clarity and an even more informative book.

Or even a dedicated webpage or ten on the LBC website Colin.
With download or printable reserves or good birding area map's on it.
We just need local patch workers and or reserve managers to come up with an annotated map.

I'll volunteer to do one for Tetney RSPB.

(Yes I know I've picked the easy one)

I do assume that Far Ings NNR is familiar to birdwatchers around the County as it is a Lincs Wildlife Trust Reserve. I also think that this has generated some good ideas about having the info attached to this web-site for cross reference.

I have often been tempted to suggest this but the following is what made me finally send the suggestion in…Andy says; "As I walked along the New Pits, ...With New Pit 3 loaded with wildfowl"… I think everyone knows where far ings is etc but I for one have no idea where new pit is or new pit 3 or even if they are the same pit.
It goes without saying that many have their own patch that they want to keep quiet, I think we can all understand that but that still leaves plenty of areas that could get dropped on a LBC map.

What a good idea. Makes me wish there was a "like" button on the forum too!

I had an old map of Far Ings in the car with pit names on it.
Will look for it and post it here if thats possible.
Don't recall seeing "New Pit 3" though.

I have a full list of all the site names and all the corresponding national grid references. Maybe it is time to print a Lincs birding site gazette?

Excellent idea

Good idea Andrew.
Any thoughts on adding sites info. with maps to LBC website, so members can access them on PC and in the field via smartphone?
