I have fished the Witham between Stapleford and Aubourn for 45 years and have only ever had one sighting of a Water Rail back in about 1990, it was between Norton Disney and Bassingham. This afternoon, above Scotwater bridge(Norton Disney), i saw my second, rather pleased as the fishing wasn't up to much.
Locally, Bassingham fen area, i have seen a male Sparrowhawk, several Kestrels and Common Buzzards, including a really pale phase one, almost white underparts, 2 single Little Owls and also a pair together, a Barn Owl, a covey of 15 English Partridge and several Bullfinches.

A very happy new year to everyone.

Cheers,

Oliver.
