An interesting piece of bird activity today.
Whilst walking at Rothwell we saw a Barn Owl hunting ahead of us and, as we rounded a bend in the track, saw that it had landed in the semi-rough grassland and, standing right in front of it, with wings raised, was a Common Buzzard. When it spotted us the Buzzard flew away leaving the Barn Owl on the ground. After about another 20 seconds the Barn Owl lifted off - with a small prey item in its talons. It was assumed that the Buzzard had seen the Barn Owl drop down and was trying to steal its catch. We have previously observed a Kestrel trying to rob a Barn Owl of its meal but this is the first time we have witnessed a Buzzard attempting it.
