Yes bird watching again from the train. On this occasion at Havenhouse yesterday 2 February. Nearby 140 PF Geese in an Autumn sown cereal field. A Barn Owl hunting over a dyke side and 4 Kestrels between Havenhouse and Wainfleet. Quite a winter scene with a dusting of snow! The last Rough-legged I saw in Lincolnshire was in December 2003. I had written in my field notes on that occasion "Like a large Buzzard with a light coloured tail hovering clumsily on very slowly beating wings". My only other County record was in 1989 when I recorded " a white tail with a broadish black band near tip, slightly larger than Buzzard, wings seemed noticeably longer. Suggested a gigantic, ponderous Kestrel.
I'm always going on about the importance of field notes made at the time of sighting but not only are they interesting years afterwards but we should actively encourage our younger members so to do.
