Post subject: | Report of Black Stork at Goxhill |
Had a call this afternoon re a report on rare bird alert of a Black Stork in Goxhill, at the junction of Ferry rd and Thornton road, in gardens! Having lived in Goxhill for 26 years I knew where it was and was dubious of the in gardens bit of the message. Being on the road I was there in about 12 minutes: the people who live at the junction kindly showed me their garden where there were no storks on the lawn! They had been in the garden but seen no one and no bird. The field behind was wheat with a working combine. I checked other grass paddocks nearby but the in gardens still sounded too odd to be true unless of course the message should have been OVER gardens? Further down Thornton Road I asked the people at the garden centre if they had seen a big bird and they came back with yes a huge bird circling over the road with a long neck, looked prehistoric: went low over the hedge as if landing but then they also claimed to have seen it in a horse paddock on Manor Lane. I checked all around Goxhill until 20:45 but had no luck but if a bird was in a small field there are 1000 places that are invisible from roads. The turn out for the search was typically muted and oddly the record has still not been picked up by Birdguides, or have they filtered it? Spent the morning around S Somercotes - Covenham so all in all a stork free day |
