An excellent afternoon at the mere:-
At 12:20 I found a 1st year Avocet asleep amongst the resting Lesser Black-backs, Shovelers and Gadwall. The bird spent time sleeping and feeding and was spooked and flew round a few times. At about 15:40 it flew off high SE. This is the first record for the patch.
Also at the mere this afternoon were:-
1 2nd year Caspian Gull
1 adult Yellow-legged Gull
16 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
1 Bittern
6 Little Egrets
4 Grey Herons
1 Water Rail
1 Common Sandpiper
2 Buzzards
1 Peregrine
1 Hobby
2 Reed Warblers
33 Shoveler
c45 Teal
3 Little Grebes
14 Cormorants
2 Swifts
c15 Sand Martins
