Despite the terrible weather, continual heavy rain, I went across patch this morning hoping something may have dropped in at the mere, the only thing that had done was rain with the level having risen 20mm since yesterday. As I was approaching the mere a couple were leaving (E Europeans), I spoke to them but they just grunted back. Nearing the hide I could smell smoke and when I got there the door was open with smoke pouring out. The dustbin had been set fire inside the hide. I moved it outside and fortunately no damage had been done, apart from the smell of smoke. Bottles and litter, including empty packets of "legal highs", were on the floor and I cleared these up. Presumably they had spent the night in the hide. I despair, don't mind them sleeping in the hide but why leave the place in a mess. Despite the foul weather I still recorded 43 species with the highlights being 1 Woodcock, 1 drake Goosander & 2 Wigeon flying over.
