Interesting to see that there was a Turtle Dove in a Goxhill garden yesterday

Not a bad decision - with our recent mild winters it was probably less of a risk staying here compared to dodging bullets migrating to it's more traditional winter haunts and back

Good decision indeed given the EU's decision to allow this :

Eduardo Gonçalves, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “It’s absolutely incomprehensible that the Maltese government can justify allowing the spring hunt to go ahead for another year. The science shows that the turtle dove is in serious decline but instead of listening to the science the Maltese government has bowed to a vociferous hunting lobby.

“The hunting of birds in spring is prohibited in EU law. It’s time the EU acted. People should contact their MEPs and tell them what they think.”

Liberal Democrat MEP, Catherine Bearder, said: “Now the bird has been officially listed as endangered, there is no way this hunting can be declared sustainable. The EU must step in and enforce the law to save the turtle dove before it is too late.”

I will certainly be writing, I would be interested to know how many we can manage between us..

I've written to all 5 East Midlands MEPs through 'writetothem' tonight. Wait to see if I get any response.

As far as the photo goes the bird is clearly not in a very good state with a lot of missing wing feathers and coverts: whether this would be natural at this time of year I would doubt suspect they moult on arrival in the wintering areas. Just wonder if they are actually kept in captivity at all? It has clearly not flown far in that condition.
