A few more migrants were in evidence at the south end this morning, hence one Whimbrel, 4 Willow Warblers, 4 Chiffchaffs, one Reed Warbler, one Sedge Warbler, 2 Common Whitethroats, one Goldcrest, 5 Swallows and 2 House Martins. At the onset of a shower, a Wheatear dropped like a stone from the sky and onto the dunes. Other birds of note were 4 Common Scoters which flew south at sea, and singles of Water Rail, Common Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Merlin and Short-eared Owl.

Re "dropped like a stone", is there any research on how high wheatears and other summer migrants fly when on passage?

What happens when they encounter rain when they're flying over the sea?
