A female Pied Flycatcher at Anderby Creek this morning. At one point the bird became impaled in buckthorn and had to be released.

Three Wood Sandpipers dropped in on Anderby wetlands where there were also four Greenshanks.

A Garden Warbler and Gropper both singing and a steady trickle of Swallows and Swifts south.

How unusual is it for a bird to become impaled on buckthorn?

I've never heard of that happening before.

Was it fairly easy to release? Was it injured?

Are there any more details of the incident? Would be interested to know more.

The flycatcher was feeding along the pathway then darted into the buckthorn and became impaled through a primary and also caught in the carpal area.
I watched it struggle for a while then decided it couldn't release itself so managed to get into the buckthorn and it was fairly easy to release. It flew off immediately after release and resumed feeding.

A photo of the bird impaled can be seen here:

At least two Woods Sands still present this evening along with eight greenshank (but no sign of the flycatcher).

It was the rather bedraggled Cornish Snowy Owl on its first morning.

At Anderby:

Wood Sand - 1
Whinchat - 2
Greenshank -10

Common Sand - 1 Huttoft Pit

Anderby 13.5
Whinchat - 1
Greenshank - 8

Some rubbish Whinchat shots here:
