Lincolnshire Show today

Imagine my surprise to see a pair of Oystercatcher foraging in the main ring at the show this afternoon during the grand parade of livestock!!

This is a species on the move in the Bain Valley at least. They have been breeding at West Ashby for a number of years now and this year there have been at least 2 pairs. At the weekend a neighbouring farmer told me of a bird on 3 eggs in a nest he found whilst tractor hoeing his sugar beet. This would be the first breeding attempt in Baumber parish that I am aware of.

Similarly in Market Rasen area - unsuccessful attempts on the Racecourse and Wickenby Airfield and now a pair are nesting in a beet field next to the Racecourse Car Park.

A pair of Oystercatchers have been in evidence in farmland around Dunston for the last two Springs although I have not been able to confirm successful breeding. Today (28 June) 3 birds were feeding on the playing field in the village during the rain in the evening. Although this species is regularly seen inland this sighting still seemed slightly surreal.

Michael, regarding your report of Oystercatcher at Lincs showground, I was there a year or two ago and and the birds in question were breeding on the green roof of the central building (is it called the epic centre?). Glad to hear they are still around.
