Matt photographed an adult summer Squacco as it flew over Ness pit at Far Ings last night. With the large area of suitable habitat between Barton and Barrow Haven there has to be a decent chance it is still in the area but a lot more eyes would stand more chance of picking it up: between 05:30 and 13:00 there were actually a maximum of 6 eyes looking for the bird. Probably a different number of eyes might have been present if the bird had been located. With no recent reports in Britain it makes you wonder where it has appeared from?

But only 8 again tonight though a bit of intuition payed off and the spread of eyes produced excellent views albeit late on
No doubt there will be more eyes tomorrow for a guaranteed sighting but after 11 hours today maybe picking it up coming in high from the east was just reward

The Ness End car park gates will be left open this evening (as they were last night and this morning) to allow access for those wanting to search for the Squacco Heron

The Squacco Heron was seen again this evening. It was first seen from the Scrapes embankment in the distance, flying in from the east just after 8.30pm, whereby it appeared to drop into the SW section of Hotel Pit. The group of assembled birders then relocated and a lucky few managed to see it from Hotel Hide at around 9pm, low down in an overhanging tree. It then moved along the edge of the ditch/pool adjacent to the track and out of sight.

Managed a ‘barely tickable’ view of this Squacco tonight…

Not to my surprise, with a modest crowd gathered (some looking more keenly than others...), that it was picked up flying in by none other than GPC, could very well have been missed otherwise arriving late on…

Top marks to the discoverer Matt, birder / photographer no doubt destined to go places if this recent record is anything to go by, a diligent and humble young man…

Regards,

Ben

Matt has been nurtured and mentored in the Far Ings Bird Group and we are delighted that he has hit the headlines . I am thinking about developing a young birders section to create tomorrows new birders Any funding very welcome

This bird has proven to be particularly elusive and time consuming; I have spent about 30 hours looking for it around my patch over the last week and can confirm that it is not just not easy but damned difficult; After the brief sightings on the night of the 6th when it flew into Hotel pt from the east at 20:30 and was seen briefly in the hedge by the hide it could not be found on Sunday, did not fly into roost that night and the same on Monday. Several other people have put in a lot of time but the daily whereabouts of the bird have remained unknown. Then on Tuesday evening just as the rain set in with a vengeance a certain Scunny area birder who also enjoys drowning the odd worm saw the Squacco sitting there on the pond he wash fishing; a site that has been checked many times over previous days. The bird remained on that pond until 20:20 catching at least one large fish and calling fairly regularly late in the evening a fairly typical heron like aaarrrg note. At 20:20 it flew up and off to the west but was lost to view. The owners of the pond allowed access that evening but the site is otherwise private with very restricted viewing from the adjacent road. While present it made a few flights around the pond and even seemed to set off away from the site but came back each time. It seemed to be very tolerant of people but did flush at one point when fishermen walked past a hedge it was perched in. I checked the site from 06:30 the following morning and at intervals all day but it was not seen again there or anywhere as far as I know o the 10th but it could still be somewhere.
This is the 5th Squacco Heron for Lincs and the first in August; it is an adult in breeding plumage.
