I got a text yesterday alerting me to the possibility we had 50 Curlew Sandpipers on the scrapes so went for a check during lunch. I only managed to count 45 but they were mobile so I'm sure there were more out there. I then popped to roads farm grassland and found another 25 on a brief scan giving at least 70 in total. There have been reports of birds at Freiston and of those were still there we'd have over 100 spread across both sites. Also around yesterday were 6 Little Stint, 7 Greenshank, 3 Spoonbill and 30+ Yellow Wagtails. We're low on visitors due to BirdFair but a thorough days birding there, including a walk to Tabs and down the cross bank, could turn up all sorts. Tides VERY high today, tomorrow and Monday morning so get down if you can.

Plenty of visitors in afternoon Toby but not as many as there were curlew sandpipers - some counts estimated around 200

Ended my quest for my outstanding 'bogey bird' at BirdFair by seeing 2 Great White Egrets! Also held a Robin at the BTO Ringing Stand! :D

I've been scanning the Humberston end of the RSPB's Tetney Marshes for curlew sandpipers, but with no joy. Surely Freiston and Frampton can spare a few?

I missed out, too, on the great white egrets at Rutland Water even though I was in the optics marquee and had the choice of Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss etc :?

The bird fair was as good as ever - this moning I've blogged a couple of reports - eg on Chris Packham and Edward Mayer (swifts) - at http://thewryneck.blogspot.co.uk/

So we had a little look this morning and we think that we have 100 Curlew Sands per Scrape (Middle and South) and at least 30 across the reserve, 220+ minimum. There are so many little pockets that they are hiding in and move from that it would be impossible to count them all from one spot or as one person. Surprisingly not that many at Freiston this morning either. Other bits around were 10 Little Stint, 2 Spot Shank, 8 Greenshank, 800 Knot, 1k Dunlin and 700 Blackwit.
