Was out with Bob Sheppard checking some Barn Owl sites yesterday. Many pairs are now on eggs or small chicks with some very large brood/clutch sizes. We ringed one brood of eight chicks yesterday which were 4 - 6 weeks old - our first ever brood of eight! Following lower than average success this year, many pairs now seem to get carried away with the glut of food around during harvest time and are laying clutches of 8,9 or even 10 eggs. A few birds appear to be still laying which means they will have virtually no chance of success as chicks would be fledging in early December!
