Plenty of warblers, esp whitethroats and l w'thrts on footpath at back of Thorpe Park golf course, Humberston, this morning. Among them was a chiffchaff in song - admittedly not a lot of oomph to it. Odd how the song has evolved to be completely different from that of, say, willow warbler or wh'thr. Over the past fortnight have seen loads of blackcaps - all female. Is that a coincidence or do they migrate earlier/ later than the males? |

As you know, Jim, male Blackcaps don't start to acquire their black crowns for about a month after they fledge. Ringers and nest recorders have found there are a lot of late broods this year so some you have seen may well be males that have not started their post juvenile moult. |

Thanks, Stuart - I'd overlooked that a significant proportion of the blackcaps I've seen are likely to be juveniles. |
