A juvenile Hobby gave excellent views as it flew west over our Dunston garden at lunchtime today. It then headed off north. A nice garden tick. Two additional garden surprises today included a most unexpected first with a Yellow Wagtail spending around an hour chasing flies around the tiles on our roof and also resting on our neighbours house. I have not witnessed this behaviour in Yellow Wag before - perhaps something I would expect more of the occasional Grey Wagtail which visits the nearby stream. Clearly our roof was providing a bit of a feast as while the wagtail was present a Chiffchaff joined in the tile fly chasing also searching around the guttering and patio doors. The second garden record following the first just 3 days previous when was was seen foraging with a male Blackcap in our trees. Matthew |

At Garthorpe today, up to four Yellow Wagtails were frequently feeding on the roof of our house and adjoining barn. More were along the nearby river bank. I, like Matthew, didn't recollect seeing them on the roof before, though they are quite common here and it's possible I'd forgotten seeing it. Other species enjoying a day on the tiles were swallow and tree sparrow. The chiffchaffs remained in the bushes below. To revert to a posting a week or two ago, another flock of Greenshanks - only ten this time - flew south over the house at 1620. |
