Friday, 16th (with Richard Jackson) - Not surprisingly the Avocet have moved on but there were six Ringed Plover (a record count at Toft for me), a Dunlin and three fly over Golden Plover.

Similar numbers (as yesterday's report) of Tree Sparrow, Meadow Pipit, Wigeon and GC Grebe were present along with two Yellow Wagtail and 17 Teal (again, a good count for Toft). The Mallard and Pochard were absent!

All Bird Tracked.

How does one go about gaining access to this site?

Drive in and follow road round to the car park. Ask for permission to walk round the reservoir from the fishing office.

Always take care when walking behind anglers in case they should start casting.

17/09

Little Stint - 1 :D
Ringed Plover - 6
Dunlin - 3
Yellow Wagtail -2
Wheatear - 1
Tree Sparrow - c20
plus all the usual.

Further to Andy's reply to Aidan, in the close season when the gates are locked it's absolutely fine to park on the road and walk up to the reservoir.

Little Stint still present, with 2 Ringed Plover and a Dunlin in close attendance. All showed well - photos to upload later.

Red Kite showed briefly across fields/woods to the south.

Also still at least 10 Yellow Wagtail in amongst the grazing sheep from the north bank and numerous Pied Wagtails along the shorelines.

Richard.

Regarding Avocet sightings at Toft Newton, I have just come across a photo I took of one there on May 22nd 1999. My note on the back of the print indicates that this was probably the first record of Avocet for Toft Newton reservoir.
