Rob, I'm surprised your highest monthly patch species total comes in December. Is it that more effort has been made as I would have thought it would have been in September/October when summer/winter migrants overlap?

I'm sure you're right, Stuart. The total must be a result of both actual diversity and effort made. The same thoughts occurred to me and I did a quick analysis, using number of complete lists on BirdTrack as a crude measure of effort. A sample of the months this year is:
March 74 species in 18 visits (same as December)
April 72 species in 9 visits
September 71 species in 13 visits
October 72 species in 7 visits
December 85 species in 18 visits.

As Oscar Wilde said, "The truth is rarely pure and never simple"!
