First trip to Covenham Reservoir this morning (thanks to Neil Kurz for the parking info). Can't think I'll be back as the flies were totally horrendous and made it most unpleasant. Anyway here are the highlights:

8 Whooper swans
3 Mute swans
2 Grey Wagtails
2 Pied Wagtails
4 Yellowhammers
4 Canada Geese
1 Greylag Goose
2 Oystercatchers
3 Great Crested Grebes
8 Redshank

Luckily, the flies aren't always there. However, spring sunshine seems to bring them out in profusion. Anyone know what species they are?

If they are the ones with obvious dangling back legs I think they are St Mark's flies. So called because they appear round about St Mark's day which is near the end of April, so on that basis they are 3 weeks early if I've identified them correctly.
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Rick

I agree with Rick that the usual flies at Covenham in spring are St Marks flies. A little early but so are many things.

Thanks Rick and Andy.

I was just about to express the wish that they had some predators when I learned that they were important pollinators.

Long live the St Mark's fly!
