Email from Kane Brides...
If you have received this e-mail then the chances are you’ve been involved in helping us with the study of Greylag Geese on Windermere, either by sending in sightings of neck collars or by helping with the catching process.
One of the aspects of this study aimed to gain a better understanding of where Greylag geese moulting on Windermere are originating from outside of the moulting period. Thanks to your efforts, by reporting collar and ring sightings we now have a good idea of where these birds are coming from. Re-sightings have identified that the majority of the Greylags are carrying out ‘moult migrations’ from three different areas, those being Lancashire (100 birds), North Yorkshire (90 birds) and from within Cumbria (85 birds) to moult on Windermere. However re-sightings have been reported from other areas of the UK and so far birds have been reported to us from 18 different counties. To see the map of re-sightings to date, please see here.
What next?
Well we’re keen to carry on receiving your sightings throughout the year, not only are they providing us with knowledge on the whereabouts of these birds, sightings are also providing a fascinating insight in to just how mobile these birds are – so please do keep the sightings coming in, no matter how frequent you’re making them. The next aspect will be to look at the timing of arrival and departure at Windermere for moulting, so any sightings (even daily sightings) of birds at locations away from Windermere especially during May to August would be gratefully received!
Wanted
Do you have any re-sightings that still need to be submitted? I’d be grateful if you could check your notebooks and send to me any outstanding collar/ring sightings so that these can be added to the database.
Visiting Windermere?
If you happen to be visiting Windermere in June/July please do keep an eye open for the moulting flocks and any colour marked birds. Information on the number of birds within the flock and their whereabouts (on Windermere), would be very much appreciated. We have caught birds at three locations on Windermere and they tend to remain faithful to these areas – Rayrigg Hall (SD401978), near Ambleside (NY378024) and Fell Foot (SD380872).
Sightings can be sent to me at
Kane.Brides@wwt.org.ukMany thanks for your continued support to this project.
Best wishes,
Kane
