While I was checking the bottom of my garden for butterflies early this afternoon (Saturday), I caught sight of a Spotted Flycatcher flycatching over the garden from the edge of our Copse. It stayed around the Copse and garden for at least half an hour (including one lengthy preening spell in the open in the outer branches of a Hawthorn) before eventually flying off over a neighbouring garden and out of sight.

Through my binoculars I could determine that it was a juvenile, still with a few cream spots on the head and back. This is the first SpotFly I have recorded in my BBH garden since moving here from Spain some 15 years ago.

It must have taken account of your advancing years, Freddy. I'm delighted that after your forays to all parts of Lincolnshire over a number of years that a Spotted Flycatcher has eventually come to you!

True, Stuart, true..........and the strange fact is that I spent several hours on Tuesday 22nd August visiting the Fillingham Cowfields and Swanpool Cowfields in the unsuccessful search for the elusive Muscicapa striata....including having to dodge one wild-eyed Bull at Fillingham!
