A bouquet of 15 Pheasants (3 adults, 12 juveniles) worked its way across the open field just below our bathroom window this morning. Let's hope they avoid the local shooters club!!

A nice sight indeed - I wondered what the collective noun for shooters was! My immediate thoughts were rather unsavoury! Any offers?

Hi Danny,

Thinking perhaps of the regular mass killing of hundreds of Pheasants on the Sandringham and general Norfolk scale, I submit the following collective nouns. Take your pick :

A butchery of shooters
A slaughter of shooters
A massacre of shooters
A wipe-out of shooters
A blood-bath of shooters
An annihilation of shooters.

Shooting for the pot is one thing but I did read a newspaper report of hundreds of rotting Pheasant carcasses being dumped in the corner of a Norfolk field....(but not on Sandringham estate land).
The unpleasant aspect of my bathroom view over the fields below (stretching to Nocton Fen and the Wolds) is that the nearest field has had its regular shoots over the years - less than 100 yards from my house. The field attracts Deer, Hare, RL Partridge, Grey Partridge and Pheasant. On one occasion there was a solitary Hare running the gauntlet of some 10 shooters - the only 'game' (and I use the word advisedly) left in the field. The wounded Hare was encouraged to reach a hedge by 2 'shouters' (not shooters) - my wife and I letting rip some 'unsavoury' Anglo-Saxon remarks from a nearby open bathroom window........
which is probably why most of the shooters missed their target.
