The North Creake birds were not ringed this year or last year. In fact, the harrier protection scheme has not ringed any birds for three years. The harrier warden only makes essential visits to a nest that is under threat, mainly from crop collapsure. The Digby nest was in wheat for example, and therefore there was no risk of the crop collapsing onto the nest, therefore there was no visit. Nests that are in oil seed rape are under risk from being swamped so the warden bends the crop back to prevent this.
I'm constantly amazed and disappointed in hearing rumours that the birds at Digby are about to be ringed. It seems that no matter how many times we say its not true, someone starts the rumour again. I have no idea who starts these rumours, but i have an image of a birder who wants to start controversy for the sake of it, and doesn't care less about the birds themselves, just the thrill of starting controversy. Maybe they should do the harriers a proper favour and volunteer for the harrier protection scheme, and put in the hundreds of hours a year that the guys who run the scheme do, instead of spouting the same old negativities? Not having at go at you personally Steve, just thought this was posting as a reply here.
