A brief trip to the RSPB reserve this afternoon and was treated to a White Heron that came over the sea wall and into the lagoon, circled and dipped a few times then settled over in the wetlands.

Are these routinely observed? My RSPB guide doesn't mention it whilst another guide simply says a 'vagrant'? It is on the Lincs bird list so is a new tick for me. :)

This is utterly preposterous, and cannot go on.

I really must go one day earlier or later than planned, as with most rareties seen at Freiston Shore, I am around either a day early or a day late. I was planning to go tomorrow!!!!!!!

AARG!

Post subject:  Not absolutely sure!

Hi Paul,

My first thoughts were Little Egret as it came into view - my daughter had the scope and I had the camera. The bird was very brightly lit in the cloudless sky (rather unusual for this time of year!) and the camera lens didn't give anything unusual away - unfortunately it didn't land on the lagoon but instead chose to go to the far corner of the adjacent wetland.

It wasn't 'till I got home and looked at the images that I thought differently, a couple of photos showed yellow legs, not just feet, and a hint of yellow on the bill - the rather angular neck also seemed to hint at White Heron rather than Little Egret.

These are the only photo's that provide any detail, so please let me have your views....

It looks like a Little Egret.

Also, the White Heron has a yellow bill rather than a black one......

Don't worry - it's better than thinking you've seen a barn owl when it was actually an england flag tied to a fence post, or leading your dad on a mission to see what you think is a Stork but turns out to be a Mute Swan!
