After 18 hrs of seawatching at Chapel Point this week I finally had decent views of a Great Shearwater majestically shearing South this evening. Remarkably I was following a Red-necked Grebe through my 45ww when the Shearwater appeared and, such was my adrenalin rush, I cannot say whether the Grebe overtook the Shearwater or vice versa. Anyway it was obvious at once what the ID was and in the brilliant evening sunshine I watched it fly a long way South ( I even had it well in view whilst telling Kev Wilson on the phone to hurry over to the sea at Gib to see if he could get it!!). I'd had 3 Manxies already and they were keeping low and not flapping but this bird was shearing quite high up at times and flapping regularly. After the Manxies this bird looked large, not as stiff winged and the white contrasting base to the tail was clearly visible as was the black crown/pale neck collar. Underparts appeared pretty white in the sun but some dark was visible around the vent and under the wings. I feel I've earned it as it's been a long week since the long ride to see the American Goldies - just keep putting that seawatching time in. Also seen today of note: Red T Diver 3 ads Razorbill - 1 on sea Arctic Tern - +/- 20 imms and ads Bonxie - 2 Med Gull - 1 ad |
