The Bittern showed well this afternoon perched in the reeds on the front edge of the main reed bed. It was on view for over an hour, preening and stretching, before melting back into the reeds.
Most of the mere was frozen over, with just a small area of open water with c15 Shovelers, 2 Gadwall, Mallard and Coot on it, and Black-headed and Common Gulls standing on the ice.
Water Rail was heard and 5 Bullfinches, 2 males, were feeding on willow buds.
