Brief walk around Swanholme Lakes

Goosander 12 (8f 4m)
Shoveler 8
Wigeon 30 to 40
Pochard just a few
Great Crested Grebe 2
Heron 1
Plenty of Tufted and Coot

Very quiet with numbers well down on previous years - well scattered also - perhaps we need some rougher weather

I had a count of 23 Goosander at dusk on 31st which is the largest count so far this winter that I have seen, but would agree that numbers are generally down on other years. The Goosanders can be quite well spread out over the lakes during the day but tend to congregate on Coot Lake late afternoon making them easier to count.

I had a peak of 61 here three winters ago with 40 the recent average. Stunning birds and possibly one of the best sites in the County for regular gatherings in such numbers??
