What a dreadful start to the new year, weather depressing.

A trip round north lincs today saw 70 species. Highlights were:

Smew - Far Ings
Kingfisher - Far Ings
Water Rail - Far Ings
Long-tailed Duck - Barton
20 Sisken - Waters Edge
2 Whooper Swan - New Holland

Came home at 13:30 as I couldn't see for the fog.

Highlights of a walk from Louth to Raithby:

Buzzard 1
Peregrine on St James Church age and sex impossible in the fog
Kingfisher 2
Grey Wagtail
Siskin 30
Brambling 2
Tree Sparrow 30
and 3 Brown Hares boxing

Same at Gib today Russ. Only 56 species seen or heard!! Probably the worst start I have ever had to a year. Things can only get better! 9 Snow Bunting on beach, 10 RT Diver on sea and 3 Corn Bunting around Field Station were the highlights of a dull day.
Dartford Warbler heard near Lills Hut this morning apparently. This from John Shaunessy.

5.5 hours around Saltflleet and Saltfleetby Theddlethorpe N N R inc sea watch , total of 81 species seen inc 3 water pipits Rimac freshwater marsh
1 stonechat, 1 lap bunt, 1 R T diver, 2 woodcock, 1 geat spot pecker,
c70 snow bunts (saltfleet foreshore) 1 tawny owl calling 1 barn owl hunting, 2 tree sparrows and 5 house sparrows on bird table,
agreed it was a dismal day, happy new year to all John.

64 species seen today with the highlights being,
avocet north killinghome
male smew far ings
6 short eared owl &
2 ring tailed hen harrier at worleby carr 14.30hrs.

We hit the coast from saltfleet-rimac-theddlethorpe etc, stopping only for short occasions when it wasnt raining! The fog worsened too
.

52 species recorded-highlights were:

3 Little Egret in field by the road between Conisholme and Somercotes (also one over Rimac)

2 Barn Owl (one at Sandilands, one at Saltfleet

c20 Whoopers hanging out with lots of Mutes at Sandilands

1 Peregrine at Rimac (Churchill Road end)

1 female Sparrowhawk with blue tit in tow at Trusthorpe

Managed to have much of the day at Frampton and Freiston, but gave up around 2pm due to the incessant fog. Still, managed to get to 63 species including:

3 lapland bunts in the stubble fields at Frampton
11 gadwall (site rarity!) on the Frampton reservoir
Pale-bellied brent with 1200 brents at Freiston

Missed several easy birds, such as collared dove and mistle thrush, and saw absolutely no seabirds. In fact, it was hard enough to see the sea! Based on this, i reckon 80 species in a day here is easily possible...

In one day you saw half the total of what I saw all last year, and your complaining, get a grip lad, it's good just to be alive. :lol:

What sort of weather do you expect in Winter? Aren't dreary wet days the norm. Today looking out my lounge window it's a sunny mild day, but I'm not well enough to venture out. But there is always tomorrow...

There are loads of birds at the feeders, which I'm happy to watch. But I daresay you and many others would be bored rigid. :wink:

On the positive side, at least you have 364 days to look forward to. :D

I wasn't complaining about what I had seen, just the weather. We british are known for it. Having spent 5 hours out in the rain the Fog was the icing on the cake.

Having managed 16 species from my living room window I was tempted out for a walk down Hubbards Hills just as the fog came down and only managed to add 3 more!

Congratulations to John Walker for a fine effort, 81 is a very impressive score.
For the record I managed just 58 species on my local patch RSPB Middleton Lakes, not Lincs. (actually Staffs/Warks. border).
Weather here was good, dry and mild. I did miss 15 regular species.
Highlights were Cetti's Warbler and 5 Pintail.
No counts for Whisby and how did GPC do?
