Dean Nicholson found a drake Green-winged Teal at the eastern end of Teal Lake at Whisby Nature Reserve this afternoon. It flew to the western end but we couldn’t relocate it despite much searching. However its got to be still be in the general area. It’s possibly the bird that was at Collingham in Nott’s just before Xmas.
Teal Lake is currently difficult to access as there are no formal footpaths and viewing is equally difficult as there are no viewpoints/hides. Best access is the north west corner of Apex Pit across the small bridge over the Pike Drain. North of Teal Lake over the railway are another set of pits that can hold good numbers of Teal (not part of Whisby Nature Reserve) but that these are even more difficult to observe due to very dense scrub. Also note that almost all Teal are now wintering on the eastern side of the A46, with very few on the western side (Grebe Lake, Thorpe Lake, Willow Lake etc).
One for those not going to Norfolk tomorrow!

Grahame
