Post subject:  Whisby weekly summary

This last week has seen a fair bit of movement at Whisby, but unfortunately I just don’t get the time to report on a daily basis. I hope this weekly summary will give folk some idea of what to expect if visiting, although I appreciate that not all these birds will still be around and will have moved on.

This covers from last Saturday 29th March to today Friday 4th April.

Little Egret – 1 flushed from Pike Drain 1st April
Whooper Swan – 12 on Apex Pit on 1st April
Pink-footed Goose – 4 birds on Millennium Green from 31st March to 1st April at least
Shelduck – 2 over Grebe Lake on 1st April
Red-crested Pochard – up to 2 males and a female still present on Apex Pit/Butterleys Pit
Little Ringed Plover – first bird returned 30 March on Grebe Lake, also seen today 4th April
Green Sandpiper – 1 flushed from Pike drain 3rd April
Med Gull – summer adult on Grebe Lake 31st March
Sand Martin – around 9 birds on 29th March with daily records thereafter
Blackcap – 1 Coot Lake 3rd April, 3 today 4th April
Willow Warbler – 3 birds on 31 March with daily records thereafter

In addition regular records of (in no particular order!) displaying G-c Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard (display), Sparrowhawk (display), Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Oystercatcher, Willow Tit, Bullfinch, Jay, and Kingfisher.

Finally, many thanks to everyone who reports their sightings/records, either via the Forum, the logbook at the Visitor Centre at Whisby or to me direct. Sorry I haven’t acknowledged people individually above.

Regards

Grahame

Brilliant report Grahame. Hope you can keep it up as it most useful to see trends and also what we have missed!

Would it be possible to add butterfly and d'fly sightings?

For those who don't know there is an excellent report of last years birds available at the centre for £1.

Have been a regular visitor since Whisby opened and I guess a few other 'crinkleys' will remember the portacabin days. Good to see up to date sightings posted at the centre and on here.

Thanks again.

Hugh
PS no sign of LR Plover today but 2 Oystercatchers,Blackcap and Willow Warbler about
