After getting a message that three Common Cranes had been seen at Toft Newton, we arrived on site just before 10.00 a.m.& met up with Dave Hursthouse from Derbyshire who had been chatting to a fisherman to get news of the birds. We followed Dave a few hundred yards up the road in the direction of Toft Newton village and then got out of the car for a scan. Looking North-east towards the wolds the Cranes were picked up on the wing and were circling at a range of about half a mile.
After giving the impression that they might land a few fields away they gained height and flew north in the Caistor direction at about 10.05.
It appears that news of their presence was put out by the farmer. He was driving a tractor in his field and said the birds looked settled but then took off at 9.05 and flew east. Clearly, they had returned to the general area just before our arrival. So all a bit frustrating, but at least we saw them.

Also at Toft Newton was a Blue-headed Wagtail, but along with all the Yellow Wags. it disappeared at around 11.15
