The last week and a bit has been slow at times and there’s been a real mix of summer crossing over with winter.

The following summary covers highlights from Sat 5th April to today Tues 15th April.

Shelduck – 1 over Grebe Lake on 15th
Goldeneye – still 14 birds present on the 11th
Little Ringed Plover – last seen on the 5th. Appears to have gone!
Woodcock – 1 flushed on the 12th. A winter bird to Whisby.
Med Gull – the adult summer continues intermittently and was seen over Thorpe Lake on the 8th and on Grebe Lake on the 11th. By the way this is the same bird that was recently at Boultham Mere.
Swallow – first birds were back on the 6th (a late date for Whisby) with regular records thereafter.
Nightingale – first bird back today (15th) singing in the NE corner of Coot Lake
House Martin – 10 over Grebe Lake on the 11th were the first returning birds
Fieldfare – 73 flew north on the 7th
Coal Tit – 1 Magpie Walk 9th. A winter bird to Whisby
Lesser Redpoll – 1 on 12th. A winter visitor to Whisby
Brambling – 2 birds in Willows on the north side of Coot Lake today (15th)

In addition Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, and Blackcap are impossible to miss and so far I have located 3 Willow Tit territories. Buzzards are seen frequently, occasionally displaying, over the northern part of the Reserve and the Kestrels are back at their nest box in Redland’s Old Yard. Most Kingfishers appear to have moved on but there was one still lingering at Willow Lake on the 8th. Green Woodpeckers are difficult to miss in the Sandhills area where they are often heard ‘yaffling’.

Regards

Grahame
