There has been more activity over the last week but last Thurs, Fri and Sat were bitterly cold (felt more like Jan!) and although I’m sure birds were arriving little was singing. Since Mon however, it has felt far more like spring with a corresponding increase in bird activity.

This weekly summary covers Wed 16th to today Wed 23rd April

Shelduck - 2 birds on Grebe Lake from 18th onwards
Little Ringed Plover - 2 birds on and off on Bruce’s Island (Grebe Lake) since 16th
Green Sandpiper – single in the flooded section of the Grazing Marsh on 17th
Common Sandpiper – singles on 18th and 23rd on Grebe/Thorpe Lakes
Med Gull – the adult summer was briefly over Grebe Lake again on the 18th
Common Tern – first bird back on 22nd over Grebe Lake
Cuckoo – first bird back on 21st at the Orchid Glade
Nightingale – 3 birds to date have currently arrived back; 2 around Coot Lake and 1 NE Grebe Lake
Reed Warbler - first bird back at Grebe Lake on 19th
Sedge Warbler – first birds were back around Apex Pit and Teal Lake on 19th
Grasshopper Warbler – first bird back on 19th with 2 two birds today 23rd
Lesser Whitethroat – first birds back on 22nd with up to 5 singing today 23rd Try Coot/Grebe Lakes
Whitethroat – first birds back today 23rd at Teal Lake
Garden Warbler – first bird back 22nd on Magpie Walk
Brambling - birds continued to be recorded around Coot Lake with 1 on 16th and 4 on 20th

In addition a pair of Egyptian Geese have become regular but are mobile, moving around the various waterbodies and surrounding farmland, and our resident pair of Sparrowhawks were displaying over Grebe Lake on 22nd

Again many thanks to all birders that submit records, its much appreciated. Some of the above birds have already been reported on the Forum, but are included here again to give a holistic overview of bird movement at Whisby.

Regards

Grahame
