Post subject:  RSPB Freiston Shore - 18th May 2008

Time: 14:15 - 16:50
Weather: Dry, sunny spells

Highlight species - Yellowhammer (2), Ringed Plover (2), Common Tern (5), Cormorant (1 in wing-drying pose) and Little Egret (2).

Migrants in motion - Swift (10), Swallow (20), Sand Martin (2) and House Martin (3). Tried in vain to add Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail etc.....

"You missed it by Five Minutes!" - Marsh Harrier (male).

Surprise of the day - first time I go to Freiston and there are no Redshanks to report!

Best in song - Goldfinches. A lovely chorus of them around the car park and educational centre. 1 Skylark also in good voice.

The Odd Couple - Canada Goose and Greylag Goose leading out 6 young to the lagoon. Presumably these wee sweeties will be Canada/Greylag hybrids?

Still hanging around in good numbers - Brent Geese. about 1000.

On the reservoir - Tufted Duck, Shoveler, Mallards and a Coot.

On the lagoon - Avocet, Oystercatcher, Canada Goose, Shelduck

Usual suspects - Black-headed Gull, Mallard, Collared Dove, Woodpigeon, Starling and House Sparrows
