Post subject:  The last of the Curlews?

Evening all, had a pair of (Eurasian!) Curlews on territory at the traditional site in hay meadows along the River Witham at Foston this evening, quite possibly the same pair I first found here on the 31st March 1993 (we had one at Marston that was 30+ yrs old). In the absence of recent reports for cross-referencing, what is the current breeding status of this species in the county? I have previoulsy found pairs at Brant Broughton, Beckingham Camp, Claypole Fen, Fulbeck, Cranwell & Barkston Heath Airfields, Marston and Dry Doddington but have not put in any effort myself since 1998 at these sites. This corner of SW Lincs presumably still holds the bulk of the tiny Lincs population (do they cling on in the north, on the island we can't speak of, and the Warrens?). Or have they gone the way of Snipe and Redshank?

cheers

Alex

There is a small breeding population in the Osgodby/South Owersby/Kingerby area near Market Rasen. I did a bird survey at the beginning of May for a dairy farmer wishing to enter the Higher Stewardship Scheme and found a nest with four eggs. They've hatched but I can't find the young in the now long grass to ring them!!
