John,
The plantation seems to cover a large area.
Where, in relation to the car park, is the best place to look for the Crossbills?

Roy.

Sorry Roy not to have responded sooner. My first visit to the forum since 25th.
I walked through the car park and took the first path on the right running parallel with the road to Woodhall, mature pine plantation to the left. Where one reaches a ride on the left and a young plantation to the right they were in the mature pines on that corner.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

John

Hi Roy

Sheila and I, among others, were in Ostler's Plantation on Sunday and spent a good hour or so walking around. We did get to see Crossbills but only managed a female at rest. A flock of 20 or so was seen on one occaision but they were very mobile and not in the location described by John Watt.

Best of luck if you go for them!

Colin and Sheila

Pair, male amd female by the car park at 1-30 today. Really good views through bins and scope. Female 3/4 up a tree perching. Male in top canopy feeding on cone seeds.

Spent nearly 50 years trying to see one then two come at once

Spent a fair bit of time trying at Holme on Tuesday and only called here at the last moment on the off chance. Dog walkers all around and there were these marvellous birds giving me excellent views. Dead chuffed.

Also terns, oyster catchers, little grebe etc on Kirby pits and little owl on Nocton fen.

Hugh
