A covey of 9 Grey Partridges feeding in the stubble field just below the family bathroom in Bracebridge Heath at midday - possibly specially bred for the shooters. Note : We are hoping that that the shooters stay away a bit longer - Partridge shooting began on 1st September, I believe. Last autumn/winter we had 3 or 4 organised shoots in the field below the bathroom, with up to 16 shooters all lined up like a military execution squad, plus hordes of beaters, flag wavers, whistle blowers, etc. On the occasion of the final shoot, so as to put them off their aim so to speak, I opened the bathroom window and shouted at them to keep the noise down and " to shoot more quietly,PLEASE!" Perhaps it worked, for one unfortunate Hare was shot at by most of the group - a sickening sight (and sound) as far as I was concerned - but it still managed to escape through a hedge, though probably fatally wounded. As for me, I managed to avoid being shot and so lived to enjoy another day. God knows how much the shooters paid for the' privilege' of taking part in an organised shoot and for listening to my rantings! Regards, Freddy |
